14 things we learnt from Meghan and Harry's interview with Oprah

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s television interview with Oprah Winfrey sparked a dramatic series of bombshell revelations.

From Meghan’s suicidal thoughts to accusations that the royal family is racist and the full extent of Harry’s broken relationship with his father, the Prince of Wales, here are the key developments:

– Meghan’s mental health

The Duchess of Sussex shockingly revealed that she had suicidal thoughts as she struggled with life in the royal family and said, “I just didn’t want to be alive anymore.”

She said she asked for help and asked to go somewhere for help and reached out to one of the oldest people in the facility, but was told it wouldn’t look good.

She shared how Harry rocked her when she was in the depths of despair and how she sought help from one of Diana’s best friends, Princess of Wales – possibly Julia Samuel, who is a psychotherapist.

– Royal family accused of racism

Meghan said when she was pregnant with Archie, an unnamed royal family member raised “concerns and talks about how dark his skin might be when he is born”.

When asked if there were concerns that her child might be “too brown” and that this could be a problem, Meghan said, “If that’s the assumption you’re making, that’s pretty sure.”

Urged by Winfrey who had these conversations, Meghan refused to tell, adding, “I think that would be very harmful to her.”

Harry refused to give details, adding, “I’ll never share this conversation. At the time it was uncomfortable, I was a little bit shocked. “

Meghan also suggested that Archie shouldn’t be named prince because of his race.

The Duke said none of his relatives spoke out for Meghan following the racism he was exposed to in the media.

“No one in my family has ever said anything in these three years. It hurts, ”said Harry.

– Harry felt disappointed in the Prince of Wales

Harry said he felt disappointed in Charles and that “there have been a lot of injuries that have happened”.

The Duke said of his father: “I feel really disappointed because he went through something similar, he knows what pain feels like, and (and) Archie is his grandson.

“But at the same time – I’ll always love him – but a lot of damage has happened and I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try to heal this relationship.”

“But they only know what they know or what they are told.”

Harry said his father stopped taking his calls while he and Meghan were in Canada “because I was taking matters into my own hands. I had to do this for my family. “

– Baby Sussex is a girl

Harry and Meghan announced that they are expecting a little girl.

The Duke joined his wife in the second half of the interview and told the chat show host, “It’s a girl” and said it was “amazing” to have a daughter.

When asked if they were “done” with two children, Harry said “done” and Meghan said, “It’s two.”

She also confirmed that the baby is due in “summer”.

– rift with the Duke of Cambridge

The rift between Harry and William continues.

Harry revealed, “The relationship right now is” space. “And hopefully time heals all things.”

He did not criticize his brother and echoed previous comments by saying, “I love William in every detail, he is my brother, we went through hell together, we shared an experience, but we were on different paths.”

– The Queen

Harry denied that he had “blinded” his grandmother, the Queen, with the bombshell testimony of his resignation as high-ranking king.

The Duke said he believed the report could likely have come from “within the institution.”

Meghan praised the monarch, saying the queen gave her “some lovely pearl earrings and a matching necklace” for the couple’s first engagement.

She added that she hadn’t realized she had to curtsey the queen.

– The Duchess of Cambridge

Meghan said Kate made her cry over a bridesmaid dress before her wedding – not the other way around.

The Duchess said Kate was “upset about some things and she owns them and apologizes” and sent flowers.

But Meghan added that the false reports represented a turning point.

She said, “everyone in the institution knew this was wrong” and she hoped Kate “would have wanted this to be corrected”, adding, “She is a good person.”

– Lack of support

When Winfrey asked why they left, Harry blamed “a lack of support and understanding”.

He said members of his family suggested Meghan should keep acting “because there wasn’t enough money to pay for her”.

He added, “There were some really obvious signs before we even got married that this was going to be really difficult.”

Meghan said her only regret was “believing them when they said I would be protected”.

– Captured royals

Harry said he was “trapped in the system like the rest of my family”.

“My father and brother are trapped. You are not allowed to go, ”he added.

– Shock if security protection is lost

Meghan revealed that she had written letters asking Harry’s family not to take away his personal protection officers and warned that he was facing death threats.

Harry said he “never thought” that he would have his security detail removed if he decided to step back from royal duties.

He said, “I was born into this position. I inherited the risk. That was a shock to me. “

– The royal family cut Harry off financially

Harry said his family “literally cut me off financially” in the first quarter of 2020 and he went on the Netflix and Spotify deals to pay for his security.

He said he had what Diana left him and “we couldn’t have done it without that”.

– Archie’s title

Meghan suggested that she and Harry wanted Archie to be a prince so he could be safe and protected.

The Duchess expressed her shock at “the idea that our son is not safe” and the idea that the first colored member of the family will not be titled like other grandchildren.

“It is not their right to take it away,” she said of the royal family, suggesting that it was because of Archie’s breed.

But Archie, who ranks seventh on the throne, is not eligible to be an HRH or a prince due to the rules King George V made more than 100 years ago.

– Meghan’s jealousy

Harry said the royal family welcomed Meghan but things changed after her tour of Australia and New Zealand.

He suggested that they were jealous of her because of the ease with which she performed royal duties on the trip.

“That brought back memories,” he said in an obvious reference to Diana.

– The other wedding

Meghan said she and Harry had a secret wedding ceremony with the Archbishop of Canterbury in their “back yard” three days before their grand royal wedding.

The Duchess said “nobody knew” and the couple shared personal vows for “just the two of us”.

All Church of England weddings require two witnesses by law, so the “marriage” could have been a blessing.
