2,300 U.S. flights canceled due to storms, virus

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – Wintry weather combined with the pandemic left frustrated air travelers whose return flights home from vacation were canceled or delayed in the first few days of the New Year.

By Sunday in the early afternoon, more than 2,300 US flights and more than 3,900 worldwide were canceled on the east coast, according to the tracking service FlightAware.

Mass cancellations of more than 2,700 US flights and more than 4,700 worldwide followed on Saturday. The one-day US toll on Saturday was the highest since just before Christmas, when airlines began blaming staff shortages due to increasing Covid-19 infections among crews.
