A look at Crenshaw football greats from the lens of Robert S. Helfman

Since 2001, Robert S. Helfman, better known as Shawdog, has been using his Canon cameras to take pictures of the athletes at Crenshaw High.

In high school, he became more restless, so I asked him to choose five of his favorite photos of five former Crenshaw footballers who made it to the NFL.

In 2008 he started taking football photos.

The chosen players were Hayes Pullard, De’Anthony Thomas, Greg Ducre, Dominique Hatfield and Marcus Martin.

They were all notable players for the Cougars.

Helfman always carries what looks like a 50-pound lens on the sidelines of Crenshaw, while trying not to upset Coach Robert Garrett.

He has over 124,000 public photos of Crenshaw athletes shawdog.com. And those are not just star players.

He was invaluable and captured the moments of one of the City Section’s most legendary athletic programs.

As long as he continues to lift weights so he can carry that heavy lens, Helfman isn’t going away anytime soon. He will capture the next generation of Crenshaw greats.
