MOSCOW – According to Russian news reports, an actor was killed in an accident while changing scenes at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater.
Witnesses were quoted in the reports according to which the actor appeared to have left the stage on the wrong side during a Saturday night performance of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera “Sadko” and was surprised by the lowered backdrop.
After the accident, the stage curtain was lowered and the audience was eventually told that the performance would be canceled and their money refunded, the reports said.
“The opera was stopped immediately and the audience asked to leave,” the theater said in a statement Australian Associated Press.
The Australian Associated Press reported that the investigative agency into serious crimes, The Investigative Committee, said it would investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the 37-year-old man, who was not identified.
