A charity group intervenes to help New York City, facing the worst outbreak of Covid-19 in the country, by building an emergency hospital in the middle of Central Park to treat flood patients. But the group and its founder’s anti-gay sentiment history has left people wondering if it really can provide equal care.

Last week, Samaritan’s Purse, a group that considers itself an “evangelical Christian organization that provides spiritual and physical assistance to hurting people around the world,” announced it would open a 68-bed ventilator just outside Mount Sinai Hospital in Central Park, New York. The hospital is set to start accept patients coming from Mount Sinai on Tuesday afternoon. Earlier this month, the group funded and created a similar field hospital in Cremona, Italy, a country also facing a major Covid-19 outbreak.

Although the group has secured some physicians and health workers for its NYC hospital, it also called for the voluntary approval of “recognized Christian health workers”. And those volunteers, Gothamist reported On Tuesday, we are asked to read and agree on a “statement of faith” that includes this section: “We believe that God’s plan for human sexuality should only be expressed in the context of marriage, which God created husband and wife as unique biological persons made to complete each other. ”

It also confirms that marriage is “only the union of one genetic male and one genetic female”. Another point states that the unrighteous will be banished by God to an eternal punishment in hell.

Samaritan’s founder and son of infamous televangelist Billy Graham, Franklin Graham, lasted a long time convicted homosexuality as an abomination, homosexual Christians attack as “the enemy”. Graham also has criticized laws trying to prohibit conversion therapy while firing conspiracy theories on the religion and education of former President Barack Obama. The group itself has been criticized for using her charity activities as a disguise to convert non-Christians to their cause.

A city hall spokesperson told the Gothamist that the hospital should follow the same rules as Mount Sinai, including a mandate to combat discrimination. She also added that they “trusted that the joint effort of Mt. The purse of Sinai and Samaritan will save the lives of New Yorkers and adhere to the values dear to us by providing care to anyone who needs it, regardless of background.

New York State Senator Brad Hoylman (who identifies as gay) has been more proactive and made a statement Monday that called for “Franklin Graham to publicly assure LGBTQ New Yorkers that they will receive the same treatment as everyone else at Central Park field hospital.” He also demanded that New York City and Mount Sinai keep a close eye on hospital conditions to ensure that every LGBTQ patient is treated fairly.

It remains unclear exactly how the city will ensure that every patient there is not discriminated against, and whether patients – particularly those who identify as LGTBQ – will have the opportunity to be sent elsewhere if they feel uncomfortable with the group .

The New York City Department of Health, Mount Sinai and Samaritan’s Purse have not responded to requests for comment from Gizmodo. Samaritan’s wallet has not responded to a request for clarification as to whether unmarried fornicators in general are allowed to volunteer.
