Armed Buckingham Palace intruder had a knife and cocaine – but ‘didn’t know’ he was in Queen's household

An armed intruder at Buckingham Place admitted trespassing charges when he appeared in court today – but claimed he “didn’t know” he was in the royal household.

Cameron Kalani, 44, also admitted carrying a kitchen knife and cocaine canola after sparking a major royal security scare when he was seen on the grounds of the Queen’s house.

Westminster Magistrates Court heard that Kalani died on Jan.

Kalani was confused and “didn’t know where he was or what was happening” before the guards searched him and found the drugs and the blade.

Prosecutor Alexander Alawode said: “The defendant was seen by a security guard on Buckingham Palace Road trying to climb over the fence and enter.

“He climbed over the fence into the Royal Mews and then back onto Buckingham Palace Road.

“Concerned about this security breach, the guards detained the defendant in front of the stairs a short time later.

“The defendant seemed confused because he did not know where he was or what was happening.

“His bag was searched and items were found in it. He may have been under the influence of drugs at this point.

“A mental health report was delivered following that incident, which confirmed on September 21 that he had paranoid schizophrenia.”

Commenting on Kalani’s mitigation, Natasha Lake said, “He said he did not know or suspect that the site in question was Buckingham Palace. On that basis, he accepts the guilt. ‘

Deputy Chief Justice Tan Ikram postponed the case until December 16 for an attendance report and a psychiatric report.

Kalani, from Haywards Heath, West Sussex, was released on unconditional bail.

The incident follows two security fears on royal property earlier this year.

In April, a 44-year-old woman who claimed she was engaged to Prince Andrew was admitted onto the premises by awkward security guards.

A couple were arrested on May 2 after climbing a wall in Windsor, near where the Queen walks her corgis and where Prince Andrew lives.
