Army to help with surge testing in areas hit by Indian Covid variant

The Prime Minister said the army was being deployed on the streets of Blackburn and Bolton to aid testing efforts following a surge in India’s variant of Covid.

Boris Johnson said at a press conference on Downing Street that there would also be an acceleration in the introduction of vaccines, including longer opening hours in vaccination centers.

He also urged people to “think twice” before traveling to areas where the Indian variant is more common – and staying with family and friends in those areas.

Mr Johnson said, “When you see loved ones, think very carefully about the risk to them, especially if they haven’t received this second dose or if they haven’t had time to get their full effect.”

He added, “I want us to trust people, that they are responsible and that they are doing the right thing. This way you can live with this virus while protecting the NHS and restoring our freedoms.

“It is very clear that we will have to live with this new variant of the virus for some time now. So let’s work together and use caution and common sense.”
