Biden’s administration plans to close the controversial Guantanamo Bay detention center until the end of its term, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Friday.
At her daily press conference, Psaki said the government had initiated proceedings with the National Security Council to review steps to close the facility. She said it was “certainly our aim and intention” to close the controversial prison, which was a priority for former President Barack Obama that he was not fulfilling.
Psaki said some political roles in the sub-cabinet remain to be filled if the administration pushes its efforts. The urge to close the facility would be “a robust, multi-agency process,” said Psaki.
