President Joe Biden celebrated the death of baseball legend Henry “Hank” Aaron Friday and praised the Hall of Famer’s monumental contributions to the game and legacy of the fight for racial equality.
“With courage and dignity, he dwarfed the most sacred record in sport and absorbed vengeance that would have broken most people. But he was unbreakable, ”Biden said in a statement.
Aaron, a longtime Atlanta Braves right-back, endured frequent death threats from people who didn’t want a black player to beat Babe Ruth’s home run record, which has been in place for around 40 years. Biden said Aaron’s character was a major factor in winning “the hearts and minds” of those who didn’t want him to succeed.
