A four-year-old boy was found dead and stuffed in a box after failing to return home from a trip to a corner shop.
Thapelo Monageng’s family reported him missing to the police on Friday morning in Ikhutseng, Warrenton, South Africa.
Officials discovered his lifeless body Friday night after starting a massive search with his family and members of the community.
He was reportedly found in the home of a 36-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder.
His family said he had multiple stab wounds on his body while an autopsy was ongoing.
Police spokesman Brigadier Mohale Ramatsheba said: “It is reported that the boy was found in a box covered with a blanket in Ikhutseng, Warrenton.
“It is believed that the boy left his house to go to a local store around 11 am and did not return home.
“The boy was reported missing by the family at the local police station. An intensive search was launched under the direction of Captain Fourie of Warrenton SAPS (South Africa Police Service).
“The police investigated the information and the body of the deceased was found in the suspect’s home in Ikhutseng.”
The arrested man is not related to the youth News24 Reports.
The boy’s uncle, Andrew Sala, told SABC News, “We’re very sad because he was a very cute kid.”
His aunt Kelebogile Sala added: “We didn’t see this coming, Thapelo was very young.
“His mother is devastated. We are all devastated.”
The arrested man is due to appear before Warrenton Magistrate’s Court today.
