A British vacationer gave birth to a child in a police car in a dramatic way when she was hospitalized in Menorca.
The baby was born to the nameless woman in the back seat of a Guardia Civil patrol car while they were racing in a hospital in the resort island’s capital Mahon.
Both mother and daughter should get along well, with hospital authorities describing the condition of the newborn as “stable”.
The drama unfolded Monday night when local Civil Guard officials were called in to help the woman at a restaurant in the Es Mercadel resort. Local media said she was 34 weeks pregnant and her water was broken.
An ambulance had been called, but the quick-thinking officers decided to take the woman and her partner to Mateu Orfila Hospital in Mahon.
However, the woman’s contractions increased along the way and she gave birth to the baby during the trip, reports the Majorca Daily Bulletin.
The newborn was flown to the special ward for premature babies in Son Espases in neighboring Palma de Mallorca, where the baby should be in a stable condition.
Police said the woman and her partner were out for dinner at a local restaurant when she started going into labor.
