Brits left with just 5 quarantine-free choices for an autumn break

Holidaymakers could be left with just five overseas destinations to choose from should coronavirus infection rates in the UK continue to spike.

The seven-day infection rate, which is normally the global measurement used by governments, shows cases in the UK at around 44 per 100,000.

Other nations are also reporting a surge in cases which means the choice of an autumn or winter break without the need for quarantine on return to the UK is shrinking all the time.

Many countries are becoming jumpy about welcoming British tourists because of our increasing Covid infection rates. While Spain, France, Croatia, several Greek Islands, Slovenia, Hungary, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Malta, Netherlands, Czech Republic and mainland Portugal, are among the destinations on the UK government quarantine list.

Denmark, Gibraltar and Iceland are also expected to be added to that list in the coming weeks.

So which countries will Britons be allowed to visit in the coming months without the need for quarantine in a resort or on return to the UK?

They are:

  • Germany
  • Poland
  • Italy
  • Sweden
  • Turkey

All of these options are easily reached by services from most UK airports, with tour operators offering short breaks and regular scheduled services in operation.

However, The Telegraph reports Britain’s current spike could soon see Italy impose restrictions on UK arrivals within days.

A full quarantine is possible, but UK arrivals will probably have to present proof of a negative test taken no more than 72 hours previously.

There are facilities for passengers to take tests at the country’s four main airports, which, if negative, means restrictions are waived.

It is a similar situation in Germany where arrivals from countries deemed as high-risk can take a test at the airport avoiding the need for isolation.

Poland has no restrictions on travellers from the UK, while Turkey is welcoming all nationalities subject to a medical evaluation. Some passengers may be required to take a test if they display symptoms.

Currently, Sweden is also restriction-free for all UK arrivals.

Options may soon be limited but there are still destinations where British visitors can escape the doom and gloom of the UK for an exotic autumn break.
