Caitlyn Jenner has said she will run for California governor.
The Republican said in a statement on Twitter that she filed documents to apply for the post.
Democratic governor Gavin Newsom faces a possible recall election this year.
Election officials are still examining the petition signatures required to qualify the recall for voting.
Several other Republicans have also announced plans.
The 71-year-old celebrity activist described herself as “economically conservative, socially progressive” in an interview with People magazine last year.
It immediately stands out in an emerging area that has so far failed to attract a nationally known competitor.
Their run would come nearly two decades after the rise of Arnold Schwarzenegger, another Republican who used his Hollywood fame as a stepping stone to the highest office in the state in a 2003 recall election.
Jenner has not been tested as a candidate and little is known about her positions on critical government issues, from the coronavirus pandemic to managing the economy.
