When reports surfaced of a shooting, a concerned man whose partner lives at the hotel wrote on Twitter: “I’m on call with the US Embassy. If anyone can help, my husband and several others are at the Hyatt Ziva in Cancun.
“Men with guns stormed the beach and started shooting. Please spread the word and get help. I have no idea what to do … “
In a separate tweet he said of his partner: “He called me and men with machine guns stormed the beach. He is hiding in a room but has no idea what to do. I don’t know what to do. “
Another guest wrote, “We’re staying here and it seems like some kind of attack in the main pool with people coming from the beach. We’re all hiding and we don’t know anything.”
One person who stayed at the nearby Hotel Azul said, “At first there was mass panic because people weren’t sure what was actually happening.
“People stood on each other to get out of the pool. People ran into the hotel screaming, but it soon calmed down. It’s just a waiting game now.”
The shooting occurred a few weeks after two tourists were killed in a shootout between suspected gang members on another beach.
