When a medical procedure mask is worn on its own, changes to improve fit, such as tying the ear loops and tucking the sides of the mask or wearing a cloth mask over it, can reduce exposure, according to the CDC. Other options include using a “mask fitter” or a sleeve of nylon tights to hold the mask tight to the face, the agency said.
The background: The study is the latest to show evidence that masks can reduce transmission. The CDC released two studies last week, including one that showed masks had helped slow hospital stays in states where their use was mandatory.
The new research too A growing number of experts – including Biden’s chief physician Anthony Fauci – have recommended double masking to increase protection against Covid-19. The advice was driven in part by the arrival of coronavirus variants in the US that are more transmissible than previous versions of the virus.
The Biden government has urged Americans to wear masks when they are around people who do not live in their households. The president has mandated masks in federal buildings and on public transportation through executive ordinances, and at least a dozen states have imposed their own mask mandates.
What’s next: Biden administration officials are expected to discuss the results in Covid-19 at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
