Chef shows TikTok fans how you're really meant to chop an onion

A top chef discovered a clever trick to chop your onions just right.

Michelin-trained chef Poppy O’Toole has revealed to her TikTok fans the secret of how to properly chop onions.

And according to the cooking guru known as Poppy Cooks to her 1.4 million TikTok followers, Poppy has shown that you don’t have to cut your onion less than six times. The daily star reported.

Poppy said, “This is one of the first techniques you learn when you become a chef.”

A video demonstration shows how poppy seeds cut the onion, cut it in half lengthwise and peel it.

She warns against cutting to the root and tells people to cut “about six times” vertically.

“Then warn against twisting your onion and chopping it. You might want to use your knuckle for protection, or you might cut your fingers and then cut it straight towards the root.

“And there you have a finely chopped onion.”

The video has been viewed more than 3 million times and viewers have been incredibly impressed with the method they refer to as the game changer.

One fan said, “Oh my god, I’ve always wanted to know this magic. I’ve been getting it wrong all along by hacking both sides.”

A second viewer commented: “Hahaha, I love cooking and have never done that. I only break the onion in pieces, but this way is definitely better.”

Other viewers recommend using a very sharp knife to cut the onion, saying that the blade would slip if the method were tried with a blunt knife.
