China hasn't been forthright on Covid, Blinken says

A World Health Organization report released last month confirmed that WHO investigators were unable to fully resolve questions about the causes of the pandemic that was killed Almost 3 million people worldwide, including more than 561,000 Americans. Reports during and after the WHO investigation show that China did not fully cooperate with investigators.

Blinken said China’s lack of transparency, especially at the start of the pandemic, made the situation worse than usual and produced “far more egregious results.”

Speaking to host Chuck Todd, he said that the situation with China speaks for the need for a commitment to greater transparency in the future on international health issues.

“Since this is Covid-19,” Blinken said, “we also need to put in place a stronger global health security system to make sure this doesn’t happen again, or, if it does happen again, we ‘be able to mitigating it, moving forward. And that means really committed to transparency, information sharing and expert access. It means strengthening the World Health Organization and reforming it so that it can do that. And China has a role to play in that. “
