New figures have revealed where each and every area of England ranks for its coronavirus infection rate.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 18 (6 percent) saw case rates rise and 297 (94 percent) saw falls.

Knowsley on Merseyside again has the highest rate in England. In the seven days ending January 23, 1,241 new cases were registered, which is 822.6 cases per 100,000 people.

That’s a decrease of 1,102.3 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days ending January 16.

Sandwell in the West Midlands has the second highest rate of 2,567 new cases from 930.4 to 781.5.

Slough in Berkshire ranks third with 1,069 new cases from 1,022.5 to 714.9.

The latest data is for the seven days through January 23 of Covid-19 case rates for all local authorities in England.

Numbers are based on tests conducted in laboratories (Pillar 1 of the government’s testing program) and in the wider community (Pillar 2). The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the last four days (January 24-27) have been excluded because they are incomplete and do not reflect the actual number of cases.

The list was calculated by the Press Association news agency based on data from Public Health England published on the government’s coronavirus dashboard on Jan. 27.
