An entire family was tragically killed when a cliff collapsed overhead while they were enjoying the afternoon on the beach.
A young couple, their seven-month-old baby, and their pet didn’t have time to escape when the cliff came down Tuesday.
The mother had reached for her son and wrapped her body around him to protect him when the debris began to fall on Pipa Beach in Tibau do Sul in the northeastern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte.
But before they could escape from the beach, the cliff fell down and crushed the whole family. the Daily Star reports.
The hotspot is known to pose a risk of cliff falls, but the warnings have been destroyed by the sea, authorities said.
Witness Igor Caetano, a sea tours businessman, told the local media that the victims were sitting near the cliffs and that the mother was hugging her baby to try to protect it when the debris fell on them.
He said, “We dug until we found the father, and then we found the mother and child.
“The boy was still breathing. A doctor happened to pass by. She tried to resuscitate the child, but it shouldn’t be.”
The man was named as Hugo Mendes Pereira, who was the reception manager at the local Sun Bay Hotel. He was originally from the Jundiai community in the southeastern state of Sao Paulo, but had lived in Pipa for several years.
Pereira had spent a day off on the beach with his wife, 32-year-old Stela Silva de Souza, their seven-month-old son Sol de Souza Pereira and their dog.
Souza’s cousin, the fisherman Joao Marinho, told the local media: “I was born and raised here and that has always happened, but the sea is increasingly destroying the cliffs. We see tourists enjoying the shade under the cliffs and we ask them to leave because we know the risk. “
Fabio Pinheiro, the commune’s communications secretary, informed the local media that the couple had been made aware of the risk by an official from the local authority shortly before the accident.
Francisco Albuquerque Neto, the community’s municipal services secretary, said the local authority had posted a warning sign along the stretch of beach where the incident occurred. But that too had been destroyed by the sea.
