Covid cases decrease across England in all but 14 areas

Coronavirus cases are falling in almost all regions of England, but some regions have not yet seen a decrease.

On Monday, Boris Johnson will outline his roadmap out of the lockdown, but has warned that he will take a “cautious” approach as the economy reopens gradually.

Infection rates continue to look promising in most areas, and officials announced today that the UK’s R-rate has fallen even further and remains below one. This is a crucial sign that the country’s outbreak is shrinking reports the mirror.

The measure that tracks the rate of transmission of Covid-19 sets the rate between 0.6 and 0.9. The latest analysis of the infection rates published today in England shows that they are steadily falling in almost all areas.

Of the 315 local areas in England, only 14 (4%) have seen case rates increase, 299 (95%) have decreased and two are unchanged.

The areas that are still growing from week to week are concentrated in the English Midlands and the north.

Corby in Northamptonshire has the highest infection rate in England. In the seven days ending February 15, 235 new cases were registered – the equivalent of 325.4 cases per 100,000 people. However, that’s a decrease of 404.3 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days ending February 8.

Middlesbrough has the second highest rate of 417 new cases from 358.9 to 295.8. While Ashfield in Nottinghamshire is in third place with 297.6 cases from 298.6 to 286.9.

Of the 14 areas that are increasing from week to week, the top five are:

  • Boston, Lincolnshire (from 155.3 to 205.2)
  • North West Leicestershire (187.2 to 235.5)
  • Exeter, Devon (37.3 to 73.8)
  • South Lakeland, Cumbria (68.5 to 99.0)
  • Tameside, Greater Manchester (180.1-204.0)

The other areas that increased were:

  • Doncaster (181.8 to 197.2)
  • Hinckley and Bosworth (160.0 to 165.3)
  • Wyre Forest, (150.1 to 153.0)
  • North Kesteven, (135.1 to 136.0)
  • Lincoln (101.7 to 113.8)
  • West Lindsey (103.5 to 110.8)
  • Herefordshire (79.4 to 92.8)
  • East Devon (58.8 to 63.6)
  • North East Lincolnshire, (103.4 to 109.0)

Stayed the same:

  • Redcar and Cleveland (stayed at 199.8)
  • Tewkesbury (stayed at 66.3)

The list was calculated by the PA News Agency based on data from Public Health England released on the government’s coronavirus dashboard on February 19.

The numbers for the seven days leading up to February 15 are based on tests conducted in laboratories and in the wider community. The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the last four days (February 16-19) have been excluded because they are incomplete and do not reflect the actual number of cases.
