Covid could surge every four months, says WHO expert

We could see new spikes in covid every four months, according to a global expert on the disease.

When asked for a suggestion that there could be spikes in coronavirus two or three times a year, Dr. David Nabarro, the World Health Organization’s special envoy for Covid-19, told Sky News: First what happened was that it builds up and then increases quite dramatically, and then decreases again and then increases again about every three or four months.

“It’s difficult to use past behavior to predict the future. And I don’t really enjoy doing that.

“But I would agree that the pattern that is going to happen with this virus is, in my opinion, persistent surges, and living with Covid means preparing for these surges and being able to react very quickly when they occur.

“Life can go on, we can get the economies going again in many countries, but we just have to really show respect for the virus and that means we have really good plans to deal with the surges.”

Dr. Nabarro said the virus will be a very difficult situation “at least” for the next three months, but “we can see the end in sight”.

He told Sky News, “I’m afraid we’ll get through the marathon, but there’s no way we can tell we’re at the end – we can see the end in sight, but we’re not there yet.”

“And there will be some bumps before we get there.

“And I can’t tell you how bad they’re going to get, but at least I can tell you what to expect.

“First of all, this virus is evolving – we have Omicron, but we will get more variants.

“Second, it really affects the whole world. And while the health services in Western Europe are in the process of dealing with it, in many other parts of the world they are completely overwhelmed.

“And thirdly, it is really clear that in no country, especially in poor countries, is there no scope for major restrictions.

“People just have to keep working and that’s why politicians are facing some very tough decisions right now.

“It will be difficult for at least the next three months.”
