Covid rules and restrictions for when gyms reopen in England this April

The gyms in England have received the green light to reopen in the coming weeks.

On Monday, March 29, the government allowed the reopening of outdoor fitness and recreational facilities, including swimming pools, tennis courts, basketball courts, and other outdoor sports facilities.

Since further restrictions will be lifted in the coming weeks, sports fans can train in the gym again.

However, there will be some social distancing rules and Covid restrictions that visitors will have to adhere to.

When will the gyms reopen?

From April 12th, indoor fitness facilities and leisure centers will be fully open, allowing people to say goodbye to home workouts for good.

Equipment such as squat racks, dumbbells and running machines are available again.

Check your gym’s website for information on how to book, guidelines, and what to do when you visit.

Social distancing remains in place, and you are not allowed to mix indoors with anyone outside of your household until May 17.

The facilities and equipment of the indoor fitness room are still separated from each other, with two meters remaining in addition to the additional cleaning procedures.

If you plan to visit outdoor fitness facilities, you need to adhere to the following rules when exercising outdoors:

  • Social distancing – When outdoors, stay two meters away from anyone outside your household
  • Two households, or up to a group of six, can meet up outdoors, including a tennis game or outdoor fitness class, if offered
  • Face masks are not required outdoors, but must be worn when walking through a recreational or fitness hall to get to your outdoor activities
