Crowds cheer as Baby is dragged alive from the collapsed apartment block to the rescue

The crowd cheered as a baby was pulled alive from the rubble of a collapsed building.

A gas explosion is said to have destroyed the apartment block in Batumi, a resort on the Black Sea in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia, on Friday morning.

The explosion reduced the building to its constituent parts, which were tossed across the nearby streets and trapped unfortunate residents underneath.

Troubling footage captured from a building across the street shows smoke rising from the remains as screams sound.

When news of the collapse spread quickly, locals joined forces with rescue workers to rescue those trapped beneath the rock.

There was a baby among them.

A video from the crime scene shows dozens of firefighters and neighbors desperately knocking a giant concrete block off the floor.

After trying furiously to move the huge piece of debris, they burst into cheers when one of them manages to get the baby to safety.

A six-year-old child was also rescued from a car parked near the collapsed building that had been hit by a huge concrete slab.

An elderly woman who was on one of the upper floors of the apartment block was also rescued.

The five-story building was built during Soviet times, but according to locals, two more stories were added a few years ago.

The rescue workers were still on duty at the location in the center of Batumi at noon GMT.

It was unclear whether local residents were killed in the collapse.
