Cruz urges diplomatic boycott of Winter Olympics in China

The US should “show the courage that the Women’s Tennis Association is showing in proclaiming the murder, genocide, torture, lies, complicity of the Chinese communist government in Covid-19 to tell the truth,” he said.

President Joe Biden has already announced that he is considering a diplomatic boycott that would ban all high-ranking US officials from participating in the Olympics in protest of the country’s treatment of Uyghurs and crackdown on democratic freedom in Hong Kong.

Some likely 2024 presidential candidates like Nikki Haley and Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) Have urged stronger measures like a full boycott, but Cruz said such a move would be a “mistake”.

It would simply “punish a generation of athletes,” he said. “We have young men, young women, Americans who have spent their entire lives practicing for this moment,” he said. “I don’t want to punish these young athletes.”

Rather, the US should call on the Chinese government to deal with the pandemic and human rights violations and win the games.

“I really hope our young men and women go there and kick their asses,” he said. “We have to win the Olympics.”
