Deputy national security adviser resigns after Wednesday's chaos

Deputy National Security Advisor Matt Pottinger has resigned and two other senior White House officials – National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien and Deputy Chief of Staff Chris Liddell – are considering, according to two people familiar with their calculations, after Wednesday’s storming of Congress to resign.

It is unclear who would become National Security Advisor if O’Brien Pottinger followed on his departure. O’Brien rushed back to Washington from Florida Wednesday night, according to two people familiar with the matter.

O’Brien was one of the most loyal Trump officials in the administration, and often praised President Donald Trump’s foreign policy leadership to the point that some Washington foreign policy circles viewed him as a sycophant. Pottinger received less criticism and high praise for urging early on for serious action to be taken to combat the coronavirus. Liddell is coordinating the transition from the White House side.
