Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna, the latest movie in Toei’s Digimon franchise, is set to tell the story of the eight children who has saved both the real and digital worlds by partnering with living digital beings a end. But that is not it the end. Just as Digimon can’t really “die”, the DigiDestined come back in a fascinating way.

While the original Digimon AdventureThe premise revolved around some aspects of our reality – such as the widespread use of the Internet – the ways in which we interact with technology has changed significantly since the series first premiered in 1999. Unlike Latest evolution Kizuna, set in 2010 (consistent with the passage of time in the original series), the new restart of Toei Digimon Adventure: reimagines Tai and the other DigiDestined as young children living in modern Japan. (Note that the colon is hanging around at the end of Digimon Adventure: is a deliberate choice to distinguish the restart from the original.)

The premise of the story seems to be largely unchanged as a disruption in the digital world begins to emergeffect electronics in the real world and DigiDestined meet their partner Digimon for the first time. What’s different is that all kids seem to have cell phones, their Digivices are all slightly physically different, and the digital world itself seems to be a more abstract, conceptual place.

As the children embark on their adventure and discover that it is up to them to fight against all creatures causing the problems of the digital world back in the real world the prevailing idea is that digital problems are part of a wider range of cyber-terrorist attacks. It is in ways like that Digimon Adventure: fits the tradition of the series to tackle real-world issues while being fantastic, while introducing new elements to the story that reflect our current reality.

Much of what the original made Digimon series so satisfying to watch over the years has been the willingness to age the characters and evolve in ways that many cartoons such as Pokémon do not tend. Emotional depth was one of them DigimonIt’s strengths from the start, and that makes sense Digimon Adventure: will stay in that tradition, but now the franchise can do that in a world that feels like it is much closer to ours.

The original Digimon Adventure was a product of how global telecommunications functioned during the late 20th century, but by 2020 the basic principles of how people access information on the internet is just drastically different. Things like chatting rooms, bulletin boards and the concept of hyperlinking are all housed with social media platforms and applications. Digimon Originally, the idea that the internet was a huge, shared space that you could explore the way you could be a continent worked. But nowadays the web increasingly consists of walled gardens for which we create portals through our phones to browse TikTok, or through our consoles to hang out with friends in Animal Crossing.

What will be interesting to see is how Digimon Adventure: ultimately makes use of what the shape of the modern internet looks like as the children go deeper into the digital world. At a time when we are all extremely online as a way of life, what does it mean to travel physically on the digital networks that keep the world going? The DigiDestined may be the first people to discover the existence of the digital world, but by 2020 they probably won’t be the only hyper-connected kids with the potential to become the unlikely saviors of two worlds.

In almost every Digimon series, when the life of a digital monster comes to an end (usually as a result of taking too much damage in battle), the creation breaks down into glowing pieces of dust that spread to the wind, making it appear as if they are lost. In reality, however, their data is eventually drawn to the Primary Village, a place where the Digimon is reincarnated (or reconstituted, depending on how you think it) as a new Digiegg full of new life and possibilities. In a way, Digimon Adventure: the Digiegg is meant to be born in Latest evolution KizunaIs awake. They are interconnected stories that represent two different stages of life for the same franchise and what time it is for that Digimon to evolve into something new and more advanced.

While Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution KizunaPremiere here in the U.S. has currently delayed, Digimon Adventure: will appear on April 5 on Fuji TV.
