Dirty John: Is Betty Broderick still in prison?
Found guilty of murdering his ex-husband, Dan Broderick, then 44 years old, and his wife, Linda Broderick, who was only 28 years old, 44-year-old Betty was sentenced to 32 years in prison on December 11. 1991 at a California courthouse.
This sentence included two consecutive terms of 15 years and 2 years for the illegal use of firearms. In the series we can see Christian Slater Dan and Rachel Keller play as his wife Linda. She shot the peacefully sleeping couple on November 5, 1989 and is still in prison.
After the murders, she turned herself in. During Betty’s trial, her defense argued that her move was not calculated and that she was suffering from BWS, Battered Woman Syndrome. Regardless, it was proven that a murderer, Betty, now 72, was sentenced to serve her sentence at California Institute for Woman in Los Angeles.
The San Diego Reader said that during her time in prison, Betty worked as a janitor, volunteered to be a tutor, and also acted as a hairdresser.
After her parole request was denied three times for showing no remorse for the crimes she committed, first in January 2010, followed by November 2011 and January 2017, Betty is expected to spend the rest of her life in prison. because she won according to CNN I am not eligible for parole until January 2032.
This doesn’t seem like a big deal to Betty as in her 2015 memoir, Telling On Myself, she wrote, “I’m essentially happy here. I am safe and there is a kind of freedom in that. “
Deputy District Attorney Richard Sachs argued at Betty’s 2017 hearing, “ Betty Broderick is an unrepentant woman.
She has no remorse and no insight into the murders. She just says “they drove me to this. ” ‘
In an interview with Oprah, Betty’s youngest son Rhett said, “She’s a nice lady. Everyone here would like her. If they talked to her on a topic other than my dad. Keeping her in jail doesn’t really help her. She doesn’t. is not a danger to society – the only two people she was a danger to are dead. ”
