Doctor explains why some people keep getting infected by Covid and others not at all

For many of us who have had Covid a few times, you may be wondering how some people avoid becoming infected.

Some people have even become infected more than three times, with the newest strain being more contagious than ever.

Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer has been isolated six times since the pandemic began.

But a doctor has stated that people “absolutely can get Covid twice” and explains why the number of cases remains high here.

Dr. Stout told Belfast Live : “The vast majority of the people we see in the daily numbers have some kind of prior infection.

“Keir Starmer is a good example because what he will have now is almost certainly the Omicron variant and before that he could have had the Delta or Alpha variant.

“One of the difficulties with the variants is that one of the previous ones doesn’t necessarily protect against the next. This is pretty clear as the previous Delta infection we know now offers virtually no protection or natural immunity to Omicron.

“That is the simplest reason why people are infected twice with Covid – it is because of the different variants.”

While cases of Covid-19 infection have been reported more than once during the pandemic, concern has grown as immunity wanes and new variants emerge.

Dr. Stout added, “This is why the booster was so important to Omicron because we knew that the immunity provided by the first two doses of the vaccine had decreased.

“So the booster provided that extra level of protection, but it actually offered additional protection, which then prevents people from getting Omicron or becoming seriously uncomfortable with it.”

But dr. Stout said research into reinfection is still in its infancy.

“It’s one of the things we learn over time, and yet there is quite a bit of data and evidence to protect people who then help with vaccination planning.

“One of the big things we don’t know is about the next variant. We also know that whether we get a more severe one or it gets less severe over time, there will definitely be more variants, and evolution is another important opportunity. ” . “
