Doctor struck off after groping woman who had sore throat

An experienced doctor was discharged after groping a mother in the presence of her young son when she complained of a sore throat.

Dr. During a date, Colin Wilson put his hand “without warning” under the woman’s T-shirt and “cupped” both of her breasts.

The 35-year-old family doctor then grabbed his penis over his pants when he was “sexually aroused,” a tribunal found.

Wilson, a partner in the family practice and medical advisor to the RNLI, has now been removed from the medical register following a medical court.

It was heard that the woman, named “Patient A”, was visiting Lorn Medical Center in Oban, Scotland with her three year old son in December 2017.

Wilson examined her son, who had a chest cough and shortness of breath, then Patient A, who had a sore throat and swollen glands.

However, the woman felt “vulnerable and confused” when the experienced family doctor suddenly groped her.

She said, “His entire hand covered or encompassed my entire left breast. His hand was over my bra.

“He hugged mine completely [right] Chest and fingers were on top of the bra when I could feel his fingers on my skin.

“It was literally just a grasping and then he took his hand out of my clothes … what made a lasting impression was that a man’s hand was on top of me.”

It was heard that Wilson was “jovial” before the incident but then “made no eye contact” and spoke in broken sentences after groping the woman.

Patient A then saw Wilson “adjust” his groin area over his pants.

She left the office feeling “uncomfortable and anxious” and reported the incident to the police after telling her partner.

Wilson claimed he was doing a breast exam, but the MPTS tribunal found that it was not because Patient A did not complain of a cough.

The Chairman of the Tribunal, Nathan Moxon, said: “The Tribunal believed that there was compelling and compelling evidence that Dr.

“It encompassed both breasts during an activity that could not be described as an adequate medical examination. Then he briefly touched his penis through his pants and presented himself nervously.

“Therefore, the tribunal believed that his actions, namely clutching her breasts and then touching his own penis, were sexually motivated.

“Patient A has clearly and consistently demonstrated that Dr. Wilson adjusted the front of his pants immediately after touching it.

“Although she stated that he did not have an erection, the court believed that he had adjusted his groin, either for sexually arousal, if not necessarily erect, or for brief sexual gratification.”

Mr. Moxon added, “The actions of Dr. Wilson were a major breach of professional standards. He has abused his professional position and committed sexual misconduct towards a patient.

“The sexual misconduct found turned out to be sexual assault … It happened in Dr. Wilson’s office to a patient in the presence of the patient’s child.”

A police investigation closed and Wilson returned to work but retired in 2020. He also resigned from the RNLI after 30 years of voluntary work.

Practice colleagues said they were “shocked and surprised” when the allegations came to light.

The tribunal heard: “Colleagues, staff and patients attested that he behaved appropriately towards women. They said they were alone with him and that he did not do anything inappropriate.

“The witnesses stated that he had not shown any sexist behavior or attitudes and they were shocked and surprised by the allegation.

“The wide range of character evidences describes a man with exemplary behavior, both within his medical career and beyond, for example in his role as a medical advisor to the RNLI.”

Dr. Wilson qualified from the University of Glasgow in 1978.
