Dr Harries: 'Looking good to end all restrictions in June'

The lifting of all Covid-19 coronavirus restrictions next month looks “good,” said the UK Health Security Agency executive director this morning.

Dr. However, Jenny Harries also cautioned to avoid a further lockdown – and said that the Indian variant has become the “dominant variety” in some parts of the country.

She told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show: “It looks good if people keep watching all safety signals. So we should not stop doing what we are doing, especially in areas where we have this variant of concern, the B1617. 2, in the northwest and around London.

“It’s really important that people keep doing their hands, face, space and work from home, having their bumps and taking tests as well.”

“The cases of the B1617.2 variant are on the rise, they have gone up very sharply and a lot of the media reported a 160% increase in cases over the week, but they seem to be leveling off slightly at the moment.

“It’s still very early.”

She added, “We all have to be very careful and I think we all don’t want to go back to the locks we had. It doesn’t matter if you’re on SAGE or in the public eye, neither of us want to go back to that type of restriction. “

Dr. Jenny Harries also said that the Indian variety has become the “dominant variety” in some parts of the country.

“It’s a mixed picture across the country,” said Dr. Harries.

“If you look at areas like Bolton and Bedford, for example in the northwest, it is gradually becoming the dominant variety, replacing the Kent variety that was our predominant over the winter months.”

“But that’s not the case across the country. If you’re in the southwest, it still isn’t.”

However, Professor Adam Finn of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization has warned that planned further easing of coronavirus restrictions on June 21 is not a certainty.

And he said that “life won’t suddenly go back to normal in June”.

Meanwhile, Home Secretary Priti Patel has suggested that the government be cautious about the final lifting of lockdown restrictions in England.

According to the government’s timetable, the last phase of activation should take place on June 21 at the earliest.

Ms. Patel told BBC1’s The Andrew Marr Show, “The data is positive about our location. Check out the vaccine information released today on the level of protection against specific variants.

“But that doesn’t mean it’s the green light all the way. There are steps that we will follow.

“We all have to be conscientious. All of us on the move, distance ourselves, wear masks and obey all the rules.

“This is part of our normal life now and it will continue and of course that will help us get that clearance on June 21st.”

Dr. Jenny Harries also said that herd immunity was “never” raised by the government at the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the UK Health Security Agency chief executive said.

This came after Dominic Cumming claimed the government originally intended to spread the coronavirus into the community in order to build “herd immunity,” and the policy was only dropped in March last year after it was warned that it would become one “Catastrophe” would lead.

She told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show, “I can categorically say that I have never attended a government meeting where herd immunity was proposed as a control mechanism at this point in the pandemic.”

She added, “I did not attend any of these meetings, but remember that as the Assistant CMO, I would not have attended most of the high-level meetings.

“I think it’s really clear what we mean by herd immunity. What you see in a population is to try to find out at what point your population is safe and that is exactly what we are doing with this very successful vaccination program that we have been running.

“This is not the same as saying, which I believe has been misinterpreted in many places, that the goal is to allow people to become infected and develop herd immunity.”

“This has never been on the agenda, but you would always see how safely you can reach your population through a vaccination program.”
