Dramatic images show the extent of a truck fire that blocked the M4 motorway in Wiltshire in both directions on Monday night and continued to cause delays on Tuesday morning.
Wiltshire Police said the truck was carrying bales of hay and smoke forced the highway to be closed.
The truck fire also kept igniting, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said, hampering the reopening of the motorway.
The traffic was jammed for several kilometers on Monday and 20 vehicles had to be released at slow speed under police guidance.
The recovery and clean-up work continued on Tuesday morning.
The latest from the travel and traffic service Inrix reads: “M4 Westbound exit driveway two-lane closed, slow traffic due to salvage work and earlier truck fire on J17 A350 (Chippenham).
“Lanes one and two (of three) remain closed, so the exit is not passable. The autobahn had been completely closed since Monday afternoon after the fire. “
