Driver swims to safety after car dragged into harbour by tide

This is the moment a motorist swam out of his sunken 4×4 to safety after being dragged into a port.

The man, described as middle-aged, was towing a speedboat on a trailer down a slipway when the Honda CRV landed in the water in Christchurch, Dorset.

He escaped from the driver’s side window and waded back to the bank at 11.30 a.m. yesterday after the incident.

His nose-submerged car and speedboat were later retrieved from the water by the Coast Guard while a crowd watched from the wharf.

66-year-old dog walker Dily Ruffer, an NHS worker, said: “I was walking my dog across the wharf when a couple nearby said, ‘Check this out.’

“The car was in the water and a man who I think was middle-aged climbed out the side window.

“Someone from the bank pushed a rubber dinghy towards him, but since the water wasn’t too deep, he was able to walk back to the bank.

“The wipers were still on, so it was a pretty unusual scene.

“There is a jetty where cars often reverse before they unhook their boats into the water.

“Of course something went wrong on this occasion, I don’t know whether the handbrake gave way or whether he stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake.

“I’m glad the poor guy was fine and they got the car back later.”

Another spectator, Jason Perry, 51, a carer, said, “It looks like the driver was backing up and misjudging it.”
