E10 petrol trick that drivers are using to get 'better fuel economy'

Drivers claim they mix E5 and E10 fuel to reduce fuel consumption after reports of driving fewer miles.

E10 gasoline was introduced two months ago to reduce CO2 emissions as it is made from recyclable ethanol.

The standard grade of gasoline in the UK has been changed from E5 to E10. This means that normal unleaded gasoline contains up to 10 percent bio-ethanol instead of the previous five percent.

However, some motorists claim that fuel economy has worsened since the introduction of E10 gasoline, despite the government claiming there is less than a 1 percent difference.

And now they are developing new ways to improve the fuel economy of cars.

A Daily Express user Dingle6677 has suggested an alternative option to E10.

They claimed, “I know it’s a chore, but try half and half 50 percent of E10 and 50 percent of E5.

“Found fuel consumption (for a) normal car is fine.

“Everything is trouble in this country, that’s the truth.”

The government guidance “E10 Gasoline Explained” outlines the changes made, including whether E5 and E10 can be mixed.

It says: “If your vehicle is compatible with E10 gasoline, there is no reason not to mix the two types of gasoline (E5 97+ and E10 95+).

“It is perfectly safe to mix them in the same tank or top up with E5 when E10 is not available.”

It also reassures drivers to use E10 gasoline in an incompatible vehicle. It continues: “Next time just fill up with E5 (’97 + octane) gasoline.

“Using a single tank of E10 gasoline in an incompatible vehicle shouldn’t be a major problem. Just make sure that next time you fill up with the correct grade of E5 (’97 + octane) gasoline.

“Unlike filling a diesel engine with gasoline, you shouldn’t have to empty the tank. As a result, your vehicle will not suffer a one-off engine damage.

“However, prolonged use of E10 gasoline in an incompatible vehicle can cause damage and is not recommended.”
