Ed Sheeran wants to build a crypt under his Suffolk estate

Pop superstar Ed Sheeran wants to build a crypt under the floor of a chapel on the grounds of his English estate.

The 30-year-old singer-songwriter received approval in 2019 to build the “private retreat for contemplation and prayer” at his home in Suffolk, where he grew up.

Another application submitted to East Suffolk Council seeks permission for a crypt in the nave of the boat-shaped chapel.

The crypt would be 1.8 meters (5 ft 10 in) by 2.7 meters (8 ft 10 in).

The inscription within a rectangle on designs on the ground floor of the chapel reads ‘burial zone below (penetration through slab)’.

The last building application was received by the building authority in December 2021 and is awaiting a decision.

Guests from all over the world visit Sheeran’s home, according to the 2019 planning application for a chapel.

“Many of these people come from many countries, faiths and customs, including, for example, the United States, Ireland, Ghana, Nigeria, Asia and Australia,” it said.

“By doing so, the applicant wants to create a space where he, his family and these diverse people during their visit can retreat for reflection, prayer and relaxation, meet, celebrate and meditate in peace and safety from disturbance.”

The chapel is said to be lined with flint, with a spiral staircase tower, a lead roof, and stained and clear glass windows.
