Elderly lady savaged by bear trying to drag her away saved by shouting friends

An elderly woman ravaged by a bear was rescued by friends – who roared until it burst.

The 75-year-old was taking an evening walk near her village when the animal appeared in a curve.

It reared up on its back legs and hit her face with a front claw before attempting to pull her away.

However, her companions, who were a few meters ahead of her, yelled at and made the animal stop.

The victim, just called Carmen, was hospitalized with facial injuries and a broken pelvis and had to undergo an operation.

The attack occurred on Sunday around 9 p.m. near the hamlet of Sonande in northern Spain.

It is believed to be the first attack on people in the province of Asturias in around 30 years.

Civil Guard officials are investigating and searching for the adult bear, which is expected to be removed from the area if deemed “aggressive”.

Local Mayor Jose Victor Rodriguez said yesterday, “In recent years we have seen the bears approach areas where people live.

“They are becoming more human and that poses a security risk.

“Government organizations need to take action to repel these animals.

“In this area we saw videos of a bear walking through the village.

“We have to remember that this is a wild animal.”

It is believed that an Oso Pardo or brown bear was responsible for the attack, but it is not known whether it was a male or a female.

Adult males can weigh more than 28 stones and females up to 22.

It is estimated that there are more than 300 bears in Spain.

The Asturian President Adrian Barbon said of the woman: “We empathize with her.”

In November, a wild boar hunter in the Spanish Pyrenees had to shoot a bear that had run towards him.
