A man in his 1970s was arrested on suspicion of murdering his partner and throwing her dismembered body in a trash can outside a supermarket.

Detectives in the resort of Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca rushed to the crime scene on Thursday after two legs and one arm were discovered in the garbage dump in front of a supermarket.

The grim discovery was made by a homeless man in search of food.

The suspect – an expat from Finland – was arrested hours later after detectives checked CCTV footage of the area and identified the person they suspected had left the human remains.

His home was then ransacked and on Friday officials searched waste treatment plans for further evidence.

Local reports said the human limbs found in the large garbage can were discovered by a homeless man in search of food.

Other human remains were found in the detainee’s home.

A spokesman for the Guardia Civil in Alicante confirmed the arrest: “We detained the alleged perpetrator of a murder in Torrevieja after the remains of the dismembered body of a woman were found in a dumpster.

“We received a warning yesterday / Thursday around noon that parts of an apparently human body had been found in the container near a supermarket.

“The suspect is a 70-year-old Finn who is charged with murder.”
