Elon Musk, the brainbox of Tesla and SpaceX, has overtaken the Amazon giant Jeff Bezos as the richest man in the world.
Musk is now worth a whopping £ 136 billion, overtaking Amazon entrepreneur Bezos’ enviable wealth of £ 135 billion.
A surge in Tesla stock price Thursday, January 7, pushed Musk past Jeff Bezos.
Bezos has been the richest person in the world since 2017.
Musk is a billionaire boss at Tesla Inc, best known for pioneering commercial space and electric cars, among other things.
He is often seen as one of the great public scientific minds of this generation, in the form of Albert Einstein or Nikola Tesla, after whom his company is named.
Musk is also the real inspiration for Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark in Iron Man.
Bezos is the top boss at Amazon.com Inc. who aggressively built the delivery company from an online bookseller to a global giant selling a wide variety of goods and making billions of dollars each week.
Including gains from Tesla stock Thursday, Musk had net worth of more than $ 188.5 billion, $ 1.5 billion more than Bezos, Bloomberg reported in the US.
The news is a cap on the 49-year-old South Africa-born engineer’s extraordinary 12 months during which his net worth surged to over $ 150 billion.
This was largely due to the fact that Tesla’s share price rose 743% over the past year due to constant gains.
Tesla produced just over half a million cars last year, a fraction of those produced by Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co, reports Bloomberg.
And the company is set to make more profits in the near future as the U.S. Democratic Party effectively gains control of Congress on Wednesday after securing both Senate seats in Georgia.
The Democratic Party previously advocated a faster introduction of electric cars to curb CO2 emissions.
