England 'now in Covid third wave' as majority of areas see spike

According to experts, England is now in its third wave of Covid.

The news comes days after Boris Johnson announced that the nation’s final lockdown would be postponed by four weeks.

The fourth phase of England’s roadmap out of the lockdown was due to take place on Sunday June 21, but has been postponed due to the infection rates of the Delta variant.

In the past week, the number of those who tested positive rose by a third with 61,181 new infections.

The number of infections this week exceeded 10,000 a day for the first time since February. Der Spiegel reports.

In his speech this morning, Professor Adam Finn, who advises the government on the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI), said a “third wave” of Coronavirus Infections “is definitely afoot”.

Latest data shows that 258 of England’s 315 local governments have seen increases in cases from week to week, with North Tyneside, Liverpool, County Durham, Cornwall and Hyndburn seeing the largest increases.

University of Bristol Academician Prof. Finn told BBC Radio 4’s Today program: “It’s going up, maybe we can be a little optimistic that it’s not going up any faster, but still it’s going up, so this is it third wave definitely underway.

“We can conclude that the race between the vaccine program, especially the second dose in the elderly, and the third wave of the Delta variant is well underway.”

Prof. Finn said the JCVI was still working on deciding whether to vaccinate children, but said efforts would not be an immediate priority if approved.

“Even if a decision were made to vaccinate children, it would not be appropriate now, either here or anywhere else in Europe, to give our doses mainly to children as adults get sick, so vaccinating adults is clearly a priority right now.” ,” he said.

Last night, the Ministry of Health announced that 42,460,632 people had a first shot and 30,898,467 – 58.7 percent of the adult population – had both doses.

The five areas with the greatest increases from week to week are:

  • North Tyneside (from 78.4 to 190.9)
  • Liverpool (68.9 to 159.6)
  • County Durham (39.6 to 128.8)
  • Cornwall and Isles of Scilly (12.2 to 99.5)
  • Hyndburn (368.9 to 455.3)

Blackburn with Darwen in Lancashire continues to have the highest rate, with 804 new cases in the seven days to June 14 – the equivalent of 537.1 cases per 100,000 people.

That is a decrease from 667.4 in the seven days ending June 7th.

Hyndburn in Lancashire has the second highest rate with 369 new cases from 368.9 to 455.3.

Ribble Valley, also in Lancashire, has the third highest increase with 255 new cases from 386.0 to 418.8.

Dr. Mike Tildesley, epidemiologist and member of the SPI-M modeling group, said he was “cautiously hopeful” that the number of Covid-19 hospital admissions over the next few weeks will not be as high as it was in January.

He told BBC Breakfast: “We are now in a situation where if we back off a month, we see signs of cases creeping in and they have been increasing steadily over the past four weeks, but we have it not done but this is reflected in hospital admissions and deaths which makes me cautiously optimistic about the situation.

“Hospital admissions are starting to go up a bit and of course there is always a delay when the cases go up that we see a signal at hospital admissions, but of course the vaccination campaign is going very, very well and so we’re not in the same situation, The ones we had in October when cases were rising then got a great wave of hospitalizations and deaths. “
