Von der Leyen said the Commission’s panel of virologists and epidemiologists advising her on the pandemic is working with the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control to create models for different scenarios. These models will consider which measures to take and in which regions, she said. “The spread of the virus determines the pace at which we make progress,” said von der Leyen.
The President of the Commission admitted the economic pressure to lift the barriers. Social isolation is key “so as not to overwhelm the health system,” she said. But “every day costs a lot of economic power.”
The commission is also planning an “online pledge event” to fund a vaccine against the coronavirus, von Leyen said Coalition for innovations to prepare for epidemics (CEPI) and the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board.
