Facebook Deactivates Another AI After New Case of Racism

facebook has deactivated yet another artificial intelligence (AI) after another case of racism. After playing a video from The Daily Mail, featuring clips featuring black men, social networking technology asked users if they wanted to “continue watching primate videos.” After investigation, the company deemed the error “unacceptable” and apologized.

The case has been analyzed by the social network “to prevent this from happening again”. In the video in question, clips of white police officers were also shown in other clips, but no monkey or primate is shown. Darci Groves, former content design manager at facebook, disclosed the matter to the company.

“As we said, while we’ve made improvements to our AI, we know it’s not perfect and we need to make more progress. Our apologies to anyone who saw these hurtful recommendations,” facebook spokesman Dani Lever said in communicated.

On The Verge portal, the company confirmed that the topic recommendation feature has been completely disabled. However, this shows that the debate on ethics in artificial intelligence has yet to progress. In a note published in July, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) called on the administration of US President Joe Biden to take “concrete steps to put civil rights and justice at the forefront of its AI and technology policies.”
