The Earth hasn’t always looked like it does today.
In fact, thanks to the planet’s shifting tectonic plates there’s every chance the ground below your feet has done a lot more travelling than you have.
An online tool called Ancient Earth Globe lets you track this movement so you can find out where your town was on the globe as far back as 750 million years ago.
The website was created by palaeontologist Ian Webster and has been gaining in popularity.
He wrote on Hacker News: “I’m amazed that geologists collected enough data to actually plot my home 750 million years ago, so I thought you all would enjoy it too.
“Even though plate tectonic models return precise results, you should consider the plots approximate (obviously we will never be able to prove correctness).
“In my tests I found that model results can vary significantly. I chose this particular model because it is widely cited and covers the greatest length of time.”
You can use the website to see what the Earth looked like on milestones such as ‘first insects’ or ‘first flowers’.
But much of the fun can be in charting how far back in time your town’s history goes.
For instance, if you’re living in Edinburgh you’re walking on ground that has a much older history than much of the UK, while London started life some 600 million years ago under ice near the South Pole.
