The first babies to be born on Christmas and New Years are given gifts by midwives to celebrate their arrival.
Staff at King’s College Hospital in south east London said they celebrate every baby born on their ward, but those born on December 25th or January 1st are “special.”
In the run-up to Christmas, each ward of the hospital puts up a Christmas tree and decorates it to match the season.
On this occasion, employees in the labor and puerperium departments also wear festive jewelry, such as antlers on their heads.
Tracey MacCormack, director of the midwifery department at King’s College Hospital, said about 300 to 350 babies are born on the ward each month and the number tends to stay the same in December and January.
She said, “Last week was busier than this week.
“Who knows having maternity partners?
“There are ups and downs.
“We have the same number of people that we normally have around this time that we expect to deliver.
“Women and obstetricians would like to go home after they have given birth on Christmas Day because they obviously want to go back to their families.
“From a personal point of view, it is always a pleasure for us to give birth to a baby.
“It’s nice to have a Christmas baby, it’s really nice.”
Work is also being done to ensure that anyone who has the coronavirus is cared for and protected, but they are being kept away from other people who are about to give birth.
Ms. MacCormack said, “Everyone has a test when they come in and until we get the result they are considered pending.
“When they get the result and when they are positive, they are looked after in a separate room and we use all of our PPE and barriers.
“If you go to our maternity ward, we’ll do the same there, you’ll be cared for in an adjoining room.”
Dereen Edema, a senior midwife at King’s, said Christmas Day was a “nice day” and those on shifts celebrated the births with their patients and their families.
“The first baby to be born, we meet, we clap, we celebrate the baby and that special baby is given a gift,” she said.
“Both mom and the baby get presents.
“So we celebrate the first baby born on Christmas and New Years.
“We all celebrate babies, but they are the special ones.
“We give them pampering items and baby items such as shower gel and baby clothes.”
