The image of a four-year-old homeless girl eating dinner by the roadside sparked outrage.
The heartbreaking picture was taken in a soup kitchen earlier this week and shows the young child crouching on a plastic box to consume their only hot meal of the day.
It was shared by Ballymun Soup Run in north Dublin, which serves dinner to families living in shelters. Dublin Live reports.
The group uploaded the picture after a strenuous run with the caption, “Our government is responsible.”
It said, “It’s so normal for you to come over for dinner, it’s sad. No cooking facilities, what option does mom have?
“Hackers are bad for young children every day. And not cheap either. It is sad.”
Tony Walsh, co-founder of Feed Our Homeless, split when he blew up the government over the housing crisis.
He said: “This photo of a young child having dinner on a box in the streets of Dublin is certainly shameful and unacceptable. No child or person should have to sit on the street like this to eat their dinner because they have no place to call home.
“Shame on our government. When will enough be enough? Ireland is one of the richest countries in the world.
“We shouldn’t have a housing shortage and homeless crisis like the one we have.”
According to the latest statistics from the Department of Housing, 8,238 people are homeless in Ireland.
The figures for February 2021 show a slight decrease in the number of adults on the streets from 5,987 to 5,974. The number of homeless children is currently 2,264 and 935 families.
The volunteer who took the photo earlier this week said she had “no words”.
She added: “Our government should hang its head in shame.
“A four year old baby and one of the few places they have to have a home cooked meal is our team?
“These kids should have a kitchen table to sit at and have dinner, not on the floor of a box in our soup kitchen.”
