Fraudsters sending out new bogus Royal Mail text messages

Phishing scammers have started sending out a new wave of fake Royal Mail text messages.

Previously, people were warned to watch out for text messages in which criminals impersonating Royal Mail claim a package is waiting to be delivered but a “billing” must be paid first.

Now we’ve got a screenshot of a new text message making the rounds. This is aimed at people who may have sent parcels by post.

It reads: “Royal Mail: Please pay your shipping costs immediately … or your package will be returned to the sender.”

Both texts contain links to a fraudulent website that asks for personal and payment details.

Theft of personal and financial information is known as phishing – and the information can be used by fraudsters to commit further fraud that could cost victims dearly.

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) previously said the rise in online shopping means there are likely to be more people waiting for packages and deliveries, making them more susceptible to this type of scam.

Executive Katherine Hart said, “This delivery scam is another example of scammers trying to make money from the unsuspecting public. Because of the bans, millions of people are relying on product deliveries, which is why scammers have focused on this issue.

“Royal Mail will only contact you by text or email if a customs duty is due, not for domestic delivery of parcels. If you have any suspicions, please contact Royal Mail to review before clicking any links or sharing details.

“The public also needs to be aware that these types of fraud can come in a variety of forms and that scammers are not just using Royal Mail branding.

“Indeed, in January I commented on a similar scam that used DPD branding.

“These types of scams come in many forms, not just text, but also email and phone.”
