An independent investigation into child abuse in the Catholic Church is set to shake France as its leader said the commission’s investigation uncovered thousands of pedophiles.
The commission has found between 2,900 and 3,200 pedophile church members since 1950 – and that’s a “minimum estimate,” said Jean-Marc Sauvé, who led the investigation. said AFP before the results are published on Tuesday.
Earlier this year he did estimated there could be “at least 10,000” victims.
After repeated scandals, the Bishops’ Conference of France decided to set up the commission in 2018.
The 2,500-page report is the result of interviews with witnesses and research in church, court and police archives. It will offer estimates of the number of offenders and victims and will detail “institutional and cultural” mechanisms that allow offenders to stay in place, Sauvé said.
