Full list as Poundland closes 44 branches this weekend

Budget retailer Poundland will close 44 stores this weekend.

Shops are still allowed to operate under England’s lockdown rules – as they are classified as indispensable retail stores – but there aren’t enough people to keep some of the stores going.

The chain said stores across the UK will go into “sleep mode” as of Saturday, January 9, due to a reduction in customer numbers, reported The mirror.

Austin Cooke, Poundlands retail director, said: “We learned valuable lessons during the March lockdown about how buying patterns change when people follow government advice to stay home.

“If you put a small number of stores to sleep, you can protect them for the long term and bring our attention to the majority of the stores that are left open to serve their neighborhoods.

“We hope this lockdown will be brief and that we can reopen our hibernation stores as soon as possible. We remain grateful for the important support programs that are available to us to protect jobs.”

Around 800 Poundland stores will remain open, the company said.
