Girl, 6, dies after being struck by falling tree in grounds of school

A six-year-old girl has died after police were called on a report that she was hit by a falling tree in a school.

The girl was hospitalized at Gosforth Park First School in Newcastle-upon-Tyne just after 1pm on Friday. She died on Saturday, Northumbria police said.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “Yesterday at 1:15 pm we received a report that a child at Gosforth Park First School was hit by a falling tree.

“Emergency services visited the scene and the six year old girl was taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, the young girl died earlier today.

“Our officials continue to support their families, and our thoughts are with them during this incredibly difficult time. An investigation has been initiated with the police, who work in collaboration with the occupational health and safety officer. “

Headmistress Leanne Lamb said, “Our entire school community was shocked and devastated by the tragic news that one of our students died at night due to injuries from a falling tree on the school grounds.

“First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers go with family and friends of the child as they deal with this tragic loss.

“As a school and community, we will take the time to grieve and provide additional support to the staff and students who are devastated by this incident.”

Police said the family asked for privacy.
