A nine-year-old girl has drowned after she was sucked into a pool drain by her hair at her grandmother’s birthday party.
The horror incident happened on February 12, when Mariana dos Anjos Faria was swimming in a pool at a resort in the municipality of Dois Irmaos do Buriti, in the west-central Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul.
The victim’s family is reportedly from the neighboring municipality of Aquidauana.
They were said to have rented out the resort club for the young girl’s grandmother’s 75th birthday bash.
Mariana was not breathing when she was pulled from the swimming pool and her hair was still stuck in the drain.

Her dad, who has not been named, provided first aid at the edge of the swimming pool before medics rushed her to the hospital.
However, doctors were unable to revive her and she was declared dead in hospital.
Mariana’s school said on social media: “It is with immense pain in our hearts that we receive the news that our dear student Mariana dos Anjos Faria, from the fifth year, has gone to heaven.”
It is currently unclear if the police are investigating the incident.
It was also not known how the young girl became trapped without anyone noticing and how long she was stuck underwater before her body was retrieved.
