Girl 'raped and made pregnant by stepfather' given baby shower by local church

A ten-year-old girl who was allegedly raped and made pregnant by her stepfather was given a baby shower by her local church.

Horacio Insaurralde, 31, is alleged to have raped the unnamed child at the the beginning of 2020 at his home in Monte Caseros, Argentina, after the victim and her mum moved in.

The mum eventually left Insaurralde and moved out with her daughter when she realised the relationship was not working out.

However, two months later the girl’s grandmother noticed her belly growing and alerted the mum.

After realising the young girl was pregnant, the family considered the Legal Interruption of Pregnancy (ILE) – a measure taken to legally have an abortion in the country when the pregnancy may be harmful to the health of the person, or, is a product of rape.

According to the Collective Feminist group leader Ester Dotro, the young girl’s mum consulted a doctor who “thought it was riskier to stop the pregnancy than to continue it”, considering she was already 24 weeks pregnant and at such a young age.

Dotro was critical of the doctor saying the “explanation was influenced by her own ideological and religious opinions” but does not want to take away from her “medical and social work because they have done a lot.”

This, along with “some other influences of voices” telling her to keep the baby, “was enough for the mum to not have any doubt of placing her daughter’s life in danger any further” and decided to have the 10-year-old, now 11, carry the child full term. Medics say the baby is a boy.

Church officials insisted that while they believed the father should be punished, they remained neutral on the other circumstances and had organised the baby shower ‘to support the young mother and her family’.

The victim is staying at the Neonatal Eloisa Torrense de Vidal Hospital in the Argentine city of Corrientes and is expected to undergo a caesarean soon.

Insaurralde was detained earlier this year and remains in custody, however, no further details of the action planned against him have yet been revealed.

Prosecutor Oscar Fabian Soto made a statement saying: “Approximately one month ago the case was taken to trial and is pending a date from the Paso de los Libres Oral Penal Tribunal.”

A separate case has been opened against the 31-year-old in the Family and Civil jurisdiction of Monte Caseros.

Local newspaper ‘Pagina 12’ spoke with Ministerial Apostolic and Prophetic Church of Monte Caseros pastor Mari, after they decided to have a baby shower in one of their churches for the girl, described as “intimate, respecting the COVID protocol.”

Mari said that despite being “in favour of life” they firmly believe that “the person that did it has to pay the consequences”.

When asked if she supports the decision to carry the baby full term the pastor said: “I am neutral. That is a family decision.

“We have not given any advice to the family. I accept that it is a mother and a very young girl. However, the baby that is coming is a life and the young girl has to be attended psychologically.”

The family received a baby carriage and items of clothes for the baby in the baby shower.
