Green Cross Code droid that starred in iconic 80s' TV road safety adverts up for sale

The Green Cross Code droid, which was used in the traffic safety television commercials starring Star Wars actor David Prowse, went on sale 40 years later.

The green and white robot was a gift to the late British actor who played Darth Vader in Star Wars after filming for the public service videos was completed in the early 1980s.

Mr. Prowse, who starred as Green Cross Code Man, kept the R2D2-like machine in his garden shed where it languished for the next three decades.

In 2006 he gave the order to restore the 50-inch robot from engineer and prop manufacturer Mark Enright to its full operating condition.

It has since been serviced by Mr Enright, who built and operated the R2D2 in the 2015 Star Wars film The Force Awakens.

Mr Prowse died a year ago at the age of 85 and his family sells various items related to his film and television career.

The radio-controlled robot used in production is fully functional, including a movable head and illuminated chest area.

The fiberglass droid is being sold by East Bristol Auctions for an estimated £ 8,000.

An auction house spokesman said, “The popularity of Star Wars and the connection between Prowse and the franchise was so great that Green Cross Man was supposed to have a robotic sidekick, and that’s how Droid was born into public information movies in the early 1980s.

“Not only was this droid an iconic TV souvenir, but it has saved thousands of lives. He’s not just a robot – he’s a real superhero!

Mr. Prowse, who starred as Green Cross Code Man, kept the R2D2-like machine in his garden shed where it languished for the next three decades.

“Those public information films saved countless lives, and that little droid was largely responsible for that. It’s not just a mass of fiberglass and wires – it actually means something in the world that is just fantastic.

“People remember the Green Cross Code ads with such fondness – because of Prowse and his Star Wars legacy – but also because they were important. They saved lives. “The Green Cross Code movies were groundbreaking for their time – and this little droid played a huge part in it.”

The sale takes place on November 19th.
